Important Poultry Disease (Bacterial and fungal diseases)

Recently coming back after finishing my practical training in broiler breeder farm, and it's time to get serious!

Today's post is the continuation from the previous post about the common poultry diseases found in chickens. Note that there are many other thousand of poultry diseases but this post is just a remark of what I have learnt during my practical training. You may refer to other website for more details regarding diseases.

1. Chronic Respiratory Disease

  • Mycoplasma gallisepticum
  • Respiratory distress and inflammation of the airsac often occur
Caseous exudate is frequently observed on the airsacs of birds infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum

  • pericarditis, peritonitis and perihepatitis

2. Infectious synovitis

  • Mycoplasma synoviae
  • Often affects joints and hock




3. Fowl cholera (avian paseurellosis)

  • Swelling of wattles and comb



4. Parathyroid infection

  • Cause by salmonella bacteria (S.typhimurium)
Button type lesion in the chicken's intestine affected with paratyphoid infection


5. Pullorum disease

  • Salmonella pollurum
  • Ovaries are dark in color
  • Diarrhea and septicaemia occur followed by quick death

Fowl typhoid. Enlarged, bronzed to the mahogany colour liver and enlarged, mottled and brittle spleen in a turkey Diseased liver and spleen are shown in contrast to the normal ones at left.


6. Infectious coryza

  • Haemophilus paragallinarum
  • cause facial edema

7. Aspergillus (fungal disease)

  • Respiratory infection caused by fungus inhaled from mouldy litter
  • Affects mostly to young chickens
